WORDS HE WILL KEEP

How to write a love letter for him, with examples

A love letter for him does not need to be long, poetic or perfectly phrased. It needs to sound like you, point to things he will recognize, and say one or two things out loud that usually stay unsaid. Plenty of men rarely receive a letter written just for them, so even a plain page can mean more than you expect.

What should you write in a love letter to him?

Most good love letters follow a loose shape, whether the writer planned it or not. You can use it as a checklist rather than a formula:

  1. A moment. Start with something specific: where you are, a memory, the thing that made you want to write.
  2. What you have noticed. Describe something he does, in enough detail that he could not mistake it for anyone else.
  3. What it means to you. This is the part people skip. Say how it changes your day, or how you feel when he does it.
  4. A small look ahead. Not a vow. Something you are looking forward to sharing.
  5. A close in your own voice. The words you would actually say at the end of a call.

Five short paragraphs is a complete letter. If you find yourself writing more, good. If you stall, it is usually step three: you have described what he does but not why it matters.

How do you start a love letter for him?

Skip the throat-clearing. “I have been meaning to write this for a while” is honest, but it delays the good part. Try opening with a scene or a direct statement instead:

I was watching you fix the gate on Saturday, swearing quietly at the hinge, and I realized I have never told you how safe I feel around you.

Other openings that work: “There is something I keep forgetting to tell you.” “I found the ticket from our first concert today.” “You were asleep when I started writing this.” Each one places him somewhere real before the feeling arrives.

Example love letters for him.

These are examples to borrow from, not to copy whole. Change the details until every line is true.

For your anniversary

An anniversary letter can look back, but it is stronger when it notices who he is now, not only who he was when you met.

Five years ago you were the man who talked too fast because he was nervous and spilled wine on my sleeve. You still talk fast when you are excited. You have just stopped apologizing for it, and I love that.

This year was not easy. Your job changed, my dad was ill, and we spent a lot of evenings too tired to talk. But you drove four hours each way more times than I could count, and you never once made me feel I owed you for it.

I do not need a big plan for the next five years. I would like more Saturday breakfasts, one proper vacation, and you, still spilling things. Happy anniversary.

After a fight

A letter after an argument is not the place to win it. Take responsibility for your part, name what you value in him, and leave the details of the disagreement for a conversation.

I have been thinking about last night. I was sharp with you, and I am sorry. You did not deserve the tone, even when we disagreed about the rest.

What I kept remembering afterward was how you came back in to say goodnight anyway. You were still upset, and you still did not want us to go to sleep like that. That is one of my favorite things about you: you choose us, even mid-argument.

I would like to talk properly this weekend, when neither of us is tired. Until then, I love you. That part was never in question.

If the fight was serious, keep the letter short and let the conversation do the heavy work. A beautiful letter can feel like pressure to forgive.

Just because

Letters with no occasion are often the ones people keep. Pick one ordinary thing and give it more attention than it usually gets.

No reason for this letter. I just wanted to tell you that I notice the coffee. Every morning, before I am properly awake, there is a cup next to the bed, and you have already gone to shower so I cannot thank you.

It is a small thing, which is why I think it matters. You do not do it for credit. You just like my day to start a bit softer.

So this is your credit, in writing. Thank you for the coffee and for being the kind of person who thinks of it.

For long distance

When you are apart, describe your surroundings and let him into your ordinary day, then name something specific you miss rather than missing him in general.

It is raining here and the man downstairs is practicing the trumpet again, badly. You would have made a joke about it by now, and I would have pretended not to laugh.

I miss lots of things, but mostly I miss the small ones. You reading bits of the news out loud. The way you hold my hand in the supermarket like it is a perfectly normal place for romance.

Thank you for the voice note on Tuesday. I played it twice on the bus. I cannot wait to walk somewhere boring with you again.

What to avoid in a love letter to your boyfriend or husband.

Requests in disguise. “I love it when you text me back quickly” can read as a gentle complaint. Appreciate what happened, not what you wish would happen more often.

Comparisons. Leave exes, friends’ partners and other relationships out of it, even flattering comparisons.

Borrowed grandeur. If you would never say “you are my everything” out loud, do not write it. A plain sentence in your own vocabulary will sound more romantic to him than a line he has seen on a greeting card.

Too many superlatives. “The best, kindest, most amazing man” tells him less than one sentence about something kind he did last week.

Should you handwrite it?

If your handwriting is legible, yes, at least for the final copy. Draft first on a screen where crossing out is free, then copy it by hand. A letter left in a jacket pocket, a gym bag or a book he is reading tends to be found at a better moment than one handed over across a table.

If one letter does not hold everything, pair it with a list. Our gift writer lets you collect up to a hundred specific reasons across ten chapters and preview the result for free. When you are happy with it, a one-time payment unlocks a private link he can open one reason at a time, or a printable keepsake book to tuck the letter inside.
